Department Overview

The General Services Department (GSD) provides a broad range of shared corporate services that are essential to the effective functioning and mission of the WBG. GSD operations fall under very distinct and complex business enterprises that have expanded globally over the years. These services include: Corporate Security; Corporate Real Estate & Facilities; Printing & Multimedia; Food & Conferences; Travel Services; Mail & Shipping; Art Program; Commuter Services; Child Care Center; Fitness Center; Translation & Interpretation, Corporate Social Responsibility; and GSD Service Desk. The WBG Staff Association and 1818 Society report to GSD for administrative purposes. GSD reports to the Managing Director and WBG Chief Administrative Officer.

The World Bank Group Printing & Multimedia division (GSDPM) is part of the General Services Department and the provider of audiovisual, printing, editorial, and creative services across the World Bank Group. A focus on integrated services and multimedia delivery helps Bank clients maximize communication and knowledge sharing efforts. GSDPM's designers, cartographers, photographers, printers, video specialists and event technicians create and disseminate information through multiple delivery channels, including, print, video, interactive digital and live events.

Program Overview

The World Bank Group Visitors Center (WBGVC) is a newly organized program within GSDPM, and currently under construction with projected completion in Fall, 2017. The Visitors Center will be the primary environment to learn about the WBG’s history, goals, and impact in a 6,200 square foot space housed in a secure physical setting on its campus in Washington, D.C.

The WBG Visitors Center will become an invaluable source of information and inspiration, and connect the general public, clients and donors to the WBG’s mission ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity. Scheduled for opening in October, 2017, the WBGVC will house significant content and interactive artifacts archived by the Bank during past decades. The facility will include gallery space, a 10 seat auditorium, a special event space, and retail store.

Position Overview

The Program Officer is responsible for managing all aspects of the Visitor Center which includes daily operation, volunteered staff management, content acquisition and coordination, event and project management, and in house retail shop management. It also has leadership responsibility acting as VC’s representative to the public for relations, education, and visitor services.

The position will help set and advise ambitious programmatic goals for the WBG Visitor Center, develop and initiate new projects that advance the VC’s effectiveness and thought leadership, attract new audiences and cultivate loyalty. He/she will ensure cross unit collaboration and partnership, client/stakeholder engagement, and appropriate vendor management.

The position reports to the Business Development Officer in GSDPM, and works effectively with internal partners throughout the World Bank Group including but not limited to External and Corporate Relations (ECR), Operations, Archives, Printing & Multimedia.

Note: If the selected candidate is a current Bank Group staff member with a Regular or Open-Ended appointment, s/he will retain his/her Regular or Open-Ended appointment. All others will be offered a 3 year term appointment.


• Responsible for the daily operation of the Visitor Center and execution of the strategic plans, polices, and goals within the context of a WBG and GSD’s resources and facility.

• Ensure that the facility and exhibits are maintained in a manner that preserves, professional center standards, safety, and welcoming environment for diverse audiences in compliance with the WBG guideline.

• Recommend VC operation guidelines and workflow for content acquisition and exhibition management, initiate exhibit concepts and schedule, and develop educational programming and outreach.

• Facilitate the work of graphic producers, physical designers and fabricators, and media designers and producers with appropriate script and asset information; review design, production, and installation to ensure fidelity to narrative intent. Perform regular, quality control reviews of onsite installations.

• Oversee retail operations including display and replenishment to ensure that they align with the WBG standards and take advantage of the unique opportunity to generate revenues through WBG publications and merchandise sales.

• Recruit and Manage Volunteers

• Build a team that is dedicated to and excited about the future of the visitor center. Design team roles and responsibilities, recruit and manage volunteers, assign and coordinates workloads in area of expertise and responsibility.

• Set and maintain high standards for staff performance, and establish sound work practices, including effective communications channels, mentoring, and retention strategies, in compliance with WBG guidelines.

• Establish a resource based of consultants as necessary to deliver on the various objectives and projects.

• Build, develop, and execute a comprehensive public awareness program to create a measurable increase in the stature and visibility of the Visitor Center in the local community and international development community.

• Curate learning opportunities and engagement with visitors and public throughout the exhibits and meaningful programs, events, and collaborations on internal and external stakeholders.

• Identify and develop new opportunities for content acquisition at the project, program, and WBG-wide levels and maintains, enhances, and develop relationships with major stakeholders.

• Develop, implement and monitor a tailored communications and marketing plan with the objective to raise awareness of the Visitor Center, special event, exhibit or project.

• Manage Visitor Center website and coordinate with ECR for content update.

• Plan and direct event and other outreach activities for WBG and external audiences such as lectures, book signings, conferences, and meetings.

• Produce engaging public programming, presentation and gallery texts, interact comfortably with various audiences, conduct original research on the content, recommend acquisitions, develop relationships with donors and collectors, and coordinate exhibition planning.

• Perform periodic evaluations to ensure operational efficiency and are responsive to the needs of the institution. Set and track performance indicators, and conduct surveys to measure efficiency and audience satisfaction.

• Produce operation reports including but not limited to spending, number of visitors, retail revenue, changes in headcounts, events and marketing activities, and survey results.

• Masters’ degree in Communications, International Affairs/Development, Museum Studies, or related field.

• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in management, administration, and exhibition handling at institutional visitor center/ museum/ gallery.

• Knowledge and experience with traditional, print, social, and digital, interactive, and other forms of media to bring visitors to the center and to drive attraction.

• Exceptional English written and oral communication skills. Working knowledge of French, Spanish or other core World Bank languages such as Arabic, Chinese, and Russian is preferred.

• Understanding trends and familiar with various global development topics, knowledge on international development institutions.
