(Senior) Investment Officer Green Finance

The Financial Institutions (FI) department is responsible for the (debt) relationships with financial institutions in emerging markets including banks, microfinance institutions, leasing companies and other financial institutions. We provide financing products, knowledge and networking services to over 250 clients with a committed portfolio of nearly EUR 2.5bn. We aim to combine high developmental impact with sound financial returns in line with FMO’s 2025 corporate goal of

“Being your preferred partner to invest in local prosperity”.

FI’s impact agenda focusses on financial inclusion and sustainable banking practices, including green development. We aim to leverage our own impact by catalysing private investment. To support Sustainable Development Goal 13 – Climate Action, we have developed a green financing business, which we are looking to grow further for instance by supporting our clients with green bond transactions.

The FI department is a diverse, multicultural department with more than 60 motivated people who deliver high quality work. We are proud of our professionalism and teamwork. The department consists of four regional teams, a Fintech team, an ESG team and a KYC team. We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious (Senior) Investment Officer Green Finance to strengthen the department.

The activities carried out will be department wide, across the geographies where FMO is active. You will report to one of the regional managers and will work closely with the regional teams. This new role will involve deal sourcing, structuring and advising clients on implementation of green lines. The latter may take place in collaboration with specialized technical consultants.

You will also support further developing an operationalizing our green line strategy and further developing our ‘green’ value proposition for clients. This includes spearheading the design of new green financial products. He or she also has an important role to play in educating, motivating and coaching the FI deal teams on green financing.


Master’s degree in Economic, Business Administration or comparable studies;
Technical background (engineering, environmental science, agronomy or similar) is helpful;
Over 10 years working/banking experience, out of which at least 5 years in the green finance area;
Experience with several of the relevant themes: renewable energy; energy efficiency; cleaner production; sustainable agriculture; water efficiency and management; waste management;
Ability to identify environmentally beneficial projects and assess high-level economic viability;
Experience with Greenhouse gas accounting; natural capital accounting is an advantage;
Proven track-record in sourcing, structuring and designing green finance products (green bonds is a plus);
Knowledge of green market developments and initiatives (e.g. green bond market development, 1,5º Pathway, etc.);
Existing network in the green financing space (e.g. consultants, rating agencies, investment banks);
International work experience prefererably in the field of emerging markets.
