KIT Royal Tropical Institute is a non-for-profit organisation that aims to enhance the positive impact of agencies, governments and corporations on sustainable development in low-and middle-income countries. Using the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a general framework for action, we translate practice into knowledge, and apply this knowledge to achieve the aims of the SDGs. We are able to achieve this by exercising the knowledge we gain in advisory services, research, teaching, training, dialogue and discussions. The Institute also runs a hotel and a restaurant, and offers office space and conference facilities on its premises.

About the role

We are currently seeking applications for the position of Senior Advisor Financial Inclusion in our KIT SED & Gender (SED&G) unit, an international team of specialists. Our main fields of work include research, policy advice and capacity strengthening. The SED&G unit covers a wide array of areas of knowledge, spanning from gender equity to agricultural development and impact measurement. It is in the intersection of those areas where the Financial Inclusion (FI) portfolio lays.

To promote financial inclusion, KIT supports Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), commercial banks, investment funds, and impact investors in the public and private sector to shape their offerings and value proposition for women, youth, small businesses and smallholder farmers. By offering critical insight into the needs and context of these unique customer segments, KIT enables organizations of all sizes to build their business case and required competencies to offer products and services that help these actors to reach their goals.

Your resposibilities as a Senior Advisor Financial Inclusion are:

  • Within the team, position KIT as a key international player on gender-, rural-, youth-, and small business finance; 
  • Explore the market of new client and partner needs on gender-, rural-, youth-, and small business finance; 
  • Acquiring clients and new assignments for the Financial Inclusion portfolio by liaising with key clients, donors, and partners. 
  • Develop proposals and manage projects in gender-, rural-, youth-, and small business finance (action research, policy/strategy development, market assessments, capacity development, inclusive finance product design or development) at international, regional and national levels. 
  • Contribute to the knowledge and advisory base in the financial inclusion domain;


About you

  • Academic qualifications in economic and/or social sciences, preferably with a Development Finance related graduate degree; 
  • At least five years of practical experience in Development Finance and Private Sector Development, or having researched related subjects in emerging markets; 
  • Previous experience as Senior Consultant or practical experience in the financial world on related topics programmes seeking to expand financial inclusion for women, rural and youth populations is an asset; 
  • Acquisition, planning and project management experience; 
  • Collegial attitude and capacity to work within a diverse team and maintain good working relations with global partners; 
  • Fluency in English, both verbal and written essential. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an additional advantage. 
  • Ability to travel for short missions on a regular basis

What do we offer?

  • A salary based on experience and qualifications between €4.429,- and €5.618,- Euro gross (full time basis). In addition there is an 8% holiday allowance and admission to the KIT pension fund (ABP). 
  • Initial 12 month contract, with the possibility of extension after demonstrated good performance.
