On 22 October 2020, the Netherlands will host the Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS). This summit of global leaders reflects the need to adapt now to the impacts of our changing climate. The summit will help calibrate the accelerated action initiated by the Global Commission on Adaptation and leveraging further support for the global movement towards adaptation.
Following the publication of its flagship report and the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit, the Global Commission on Adaptation launched its Year of Action at the United Nations in New York. The CAS is intended to showcase the accelerated action undertaken during the Year of Action and raise the level of ambition on adaptation among countries in the lead-up to the international climate summit (COP26) in December 2020.
Looking forward, the CAS will facilitate the expansion of the Global Commission’s worldwide movement on climate adaptation, as existing alliances are expanded, new coalitions are integrated and follow-up actions are announced and initiated.
The CAS will showcase the results of the Year of Action, building on these to shape the long-term adaptation agenda. Accelerating successful action, bringing these results to scale, and presenting new solutions. The CAS is therefore organized in close collaboration with the Global Center on Adaption (GCA), an international organization, hosted by the Netherlands.
The CAS will be a high-level event attended by Heads of State and Heads of Governments, members of the Global Commission on Adaptation, and senior figures from international organizations, business, civil society and NGO networks. But the CAS recognizes that the movement towards accelerated adaptation needs to be built on the knowledge, support and ingenuity of local communities already adapting to the changing climate.
The CAS will bring together key stakeholders invested in building a more resilient world —governments at all levels, private sector entities, civil society, academia, grassroots groups, youth groups, and many others.
